I had the privilege of listening to some really great speakers on June 30. It was a cross section of very successful people that had come in to speak and to motivate us. I would recommend to anyone to attend one of these seminars at least once. The first piece of advice that I would give you when going is to take a pen and a notebook and actually take notes. I would do this anytime I was going to hear someone speak. In the case of yesterday there were so many speakers and so many things that were said that there is no way that you could possibly remember it all.
I took a notebook with me and really tried to listen and write down key points from each persons speech. Some of the speakers I got a page or more of notes, while others I only had a few lines, but I wrote down things from everyone of them to help me remember them later.
I would like to share with you some of the things that I took away from these speakers. Joe Montana spoke and talked about the importance of preparation, fundamentals, work ethic and trust. His speech was great and he gave us examples of each in his personal life. One of the best things that he said was that in his time with the 49’ers, the coach taught them to prepare to be perfect. He did this because if you prepare to be perfect and don’t hit it, you are still very good. This goes back to one of my favorite topics which is goals. You have to set that bar high for yourself.
Steve Forbes was one of the speakers that I was looking forward to listening to. I really didn’t know what to expect from him, but I was glad I did get to hear him. Steve talked about his influences in his family from him Father to his Grandfather and others in his family. He talked about putting it on the line and taking risks. He mentioned that you need to plot your own course and that it is never over until it’s over.
The next person that spoke really to me was probably the best was General Colin Powell. General Powell said three things that are so simple but can have such a huge impact on your life and business. The first is that it isn’t where you start that matters, it’s where you finish. No matter your circumstances, you can make choices and end up in a different place. The second thing he said was look through life’s windshield at where you are going, not in the rear view mirror. Look toward your future and don’t worry about the past. The last thing that he said was about leadership. He said that as a leader you must remember that the leader does not get things done, the followers do. If you live by this and respect your followers, then you will continue to be a better leader.
There was plenty of other things that I took away from this day and could continue to write about, but for now I won’t. I am still trying to grasp everything I heard and really think about these things. I wanted to share some of this with you in hopes that you too could get some benefit from it. If you ever get the chance to hear any of these people speak I would recommend it.
Have a great holiday weekend and I look forward to talking with some of you about this.
Later.
